Console Table

No. RD12998

French Régence one leg console table with original painted blue/green surface.

The gilt is also original with only minor restoration.

This console table is a superb example of French Régence Rococo, with outstanding form and delicate rococo leaf carving.

Certainly the most amazing feature is of this tableis it’s very rare original Scagliola top!

The Scagliola technique came into fashion in 17th century in Tuscany.

It was as an effective substitute for costly marble inlays (We have purposely left a chip out of the right side to show the construction).
This period table is almost always so encrusted with carving the form gets muddied, this carving is restrained and superb.

(note in the third photo how strong the carving is in raking light)

Scagliola is a composite substance made from selenite, glue and natural pigments, imitating marble and other hard stones. It is veined with colors and applied to a core and then polished with flax oil for brightness, and wax for protection. The combination of materials and technique provides a complex texture, and richness of color not available in natural veined marbles.
