Rare 17th c. English William and Mary Ebony Bracket Clock

No. R16483

Late seventeenth century English William and Mary ebony veneered bracket clock signed “Richard Fennel Kensington” with brass loop handle flanked by four brass pineapple finials.

The back of the double fuzee works is completely engraved and also signed.

The silver chapter ring has Roman numeral counters flanked by brass winged cherub corner spandrels.

The whole case is veneered with ebony (not ebonized i.e. painted).

The brass ogee feet are original. 

Howard Walwyn (a major London clock dealer) has one by Richard Fennel pictured in a brochure in a burl yew case - comparing the engraving on the back of both clock works - they are done by the same engraver (page 14)   (These are the last two photos)

Richard Fennel was the most famous of the late 17th century Kensington clockmakers. He was made free of the clockmakers' company in 1679 and is not recorded as working after 1704.
